Is the Queen of Cups you? A person you know? Advice? Let’s make the royal court of the tarot deck—the Pages, Knights, Queens, and Kings—easy to understand.
Court cards don’t have to be confusing. Think of them as a family in four different kingdoms.
- The Four Kingdoms (The Suits):
- Wands: The fiery, creative, passionate kingdom.
- Cups: The emotional, intuitive, feeling kingdom.
- Swords: The kingdom of the mind, words, and thought.
- Pentacles: The physical, material, and financial kingdom.
Part 1: Your Royal Family in Each Kingdom
Picture a royal family in each of the four kingdoms.
The Page (The Messenger/Student)
- Who they are: The student of the family. Full of curiosity and potential, carrying a new idea or message.
- What they bring: A new beginning, a message, or a skill to learn.
- Example: The Page of Wands is a new, exciting idea for a project.
The Knight (The Doer)
- Who they are: The action-hero of the family. They don’t just have an idea; they act on it. Fast, sometimes impulsive.
- What they bring: Movement, action, a swift development, or a sudden event.
- Example: The Knight of Cups arrives with a grand romantic gesture.
The Queen (The Master of the Inner World)
- Who they are: The wise, nurturing, and intuitive ruler of the inner world. She is in touch with her feelings, her intuition, and her deep feminine power. She is a master of the internal landscape of her suit.
- How she rules: Through feeling, wisdom, and intuition.
- Example: The Queen of Pentacles is the master of creating a comfortable, secure, and luxurious home environment.
The King (The Master of the Outer World)
- Who they are: The active, structured ruler of the outer world. He takes his inner mastery and acts on it in the real world. He is about structure, stability, and leadership.
- How he rules: Through action, authority, and creating structure.
- Example: The King of Swords is the master of logic, justice, and making clear, logical decisions.
How to Read a Court Card in Your Spread
When a court card appears, ask yourself these questions:
Is it a person?
- A person in your life who matches the card’s energy (e.g., a bold, creative, and passionate person might be a King of Wands).
- A role you are playing in a situation (e.g., acting like a “Knight of Swords,” charging into a debate).
- A person you need to be more like.
Is it an energy I need?
- The card might be advice. Feeling lost? Try the Queen of Swords’ clarity and honesty. Need structure? Look to the King of Pentacles.
Is it an event or energy?
- A Page often brings news or a new start.
- A Knight often brings swift action or change.
- A Queen or King suggests a period of established, mature energy.

Your Homework: Pull a single court card from your deck. Don’t look up the meaning. Just look at the picture.

- Do they look active (Knight) or thoughtful (Queen/King)?
- What one word does the card make you feel?
They are a royal family of energies you can learn one card at a time.
