Part 3: Cracking the Code: What the Numbers 1-10 Mean in Tarot

untitled 3 x 2 in 6

Welcome back to our Tarot for Beginners series! In part 1, you learned how to handle your deck and pull your first card. In part 2, you mastered the four suits—Wands, Cups, Swords, and Pentacles—and what they represent.

Now, we’re going to unlock another layer of the Minor Arcana: the numbers.

Think of the numbers 1-10 as the chapters in a story, while the suits are the themes. Together, they tell the complete story of a situation’s development, from a new beginning (Ace) to completion (Ten).

The Minor Arcana Number System: A Quick-Start Guide

Each number from 1 (Ace) to 10 represents a different stage in a “life cycle” of an idea, project, or relationship. Here’s your decoding guide:

1. Ace (Number 1): The Seed of Potential

  • The Spark: The Ace represents pure potential, the first spark of an idea or opportunity in a specific area of life.
  • The Vibe: Pure potential. A strong, clear “Yes!” from the universe.
  • In a Reading: New beginnings, opportunities, and new energy in the area of the suit. The Ace of Wands is a new creative spark; the Ace of Swords is a new idea.

2. Two: The First Step

  • The Spark: Connection, balance, partnership, or the first choice. The potential of the Ace is now in the world, looking for its first connection.
  • The Vibe: Duality, choice, and the first steps of partnership or decision-making.

3. Three: The First Growth

  • The Spark: The first visible results or growth from that initial spark. It’s the growth that comes from the union or decision made at the Two.
  • The Vibe: Growth, creation, collaboration, and the first tangible results.

4. Four: Stability & Structure

  • The Spark: The result of the Three has now been built into something stable and secure. Think of a house built on a solid foundation.
  • The Vibe: Stability, structure, and a moment to pause and appreciate what’s been built. It’s a time of security and rest.

5. Five: The First Challenge

  • The Spark: The stability of the Four is challenged. This is the first real test, conflict, or disruption. The “honeymoon” is over, and you must fight or adapt.
  • The Vibe: Challenge, conflict, and the need to adapt. It’s not a negative card, but a call to action and change.

6. Six: Harmony & Harmony

  • The Spark: After the struggle of the Five, a sense of balance, harmony, and equilibrium is restored or achieved. It can also represent the sharing of knowledge and harmony in partnerships.
  • The Vibe: Balance, harmony, and the first real sense of success and peace after a challenge.

7. Seven: The Pause

  • The Spark: A time to pause and reflect. This is not the time for action, but for assessment and inner work.
  • The Vibe: Reflection, assessment, and patience. It’s the moment before a big move, a time to think, not act.

8. Eight: Action and Mastery

  • The Spark: After the pause, it’s time to take direct, powerful action. This is the number of mastery through effort and skill.
  • The Vibe: Mastery, control, directed action, and the efficient use of skill to achieve a goal.

9. Nine: The Final Push

  • The Spark: You’re so close to the end. The energy of the Eight reaches its peak, but there is still one final piece of the puzzle to find or one final stretch to go.
  • The Vibe: Near completion. The energy is high, the goal is in sight, but the finish line is just one step away.

10. Ten: Completion and Manifestation

  • The Spark: The end of a cycle. The journey from Ace to its final, complete, and materialized form. It’s the full, realized expression of the initial Ace.
  • The Vibe: Completion, manifestation, and a sense of finality or renewal.

How to Read the Numbers: Your Quick-Start Guide

Don’t memorize—look for the story. Ask yourself:

  • Is this at the beginning (1-4), the middle and challenge (5-7), or the end stage (8-10) of its cycle?
  • Ace of Cups? A new emotional beginning.
  • Five of Swords? A challenge or conflict in communication or thought.
  • Ten of Pentacles? A project or financial cycle reaching its full, abundant completion.

Your Homework This Week

  1. Find the Number Story: Go through your deck and pull out all the numbered cards of one suit (Wands 1-10, for example). Lay them in order. See the story they tell.
  2. One-Card Pull: Do a daily single-card draw this week. Instead of just the suit, notice the number. Is it a Two of Cups (Partnership) or a Six of Pentacles (Sharing and Harmony in money matters)? The number will give you the “stage” of the situation.

In our next part, we’ll put it all together and look at some simple, powerful spreads you can use to practice reading for yourself and others. Until then, happy number-crunching!
