Welcome to the heart of the tarot. If the suits are the alphabet of the Minor Arcana, the Major Arcana are the epic, novel-length story of your life.
In this part, we’re leaving the day-to-day events (the Minor Arcana) behind and stepping into the epic, archetypal journey of the soul. This is the Fool’s Journey, and it’s the story of you.
What is the Major Arcana?
The Major Arcana are the 22 “trump cards” of the tarot deck, numbered 0 (The Fool) to 21 (The World). While the Minor Arcana (the 56 suit cards) show us our daily lives, the Majors represent the big picture: the profound, universal life lessons, archetypes, and spiritual tests we all face.
Think of the Major Arcana as a map for a soul’s journey from innocence (The Fool) to enlightenment (The World).
The Fool’s Journey: The 3-Act Story of Life
You can think of the Fool’s Journey in three great chapters.
Act 1: The Awakening (0 – The Fool to 7 – The Chariot) This is the journey of the self. The Fool (0) sets out into the world, meeting the archetypes of the human experience.
- The Fool (0): The journey begins. Potential, innocence, a leap of faith.
- The Magician (I) & The High Priestess (II): Harnessing the will and connecting to intuition.
- The Empress (III) & The Emperor (IV): The meeting of the divine feminine and masculine, the energy of creation.
- The Chariot (VII): The first major victory, a sense of control and willpower. “I can master my world.”
Act 2: The Middle Passage (8 – 14) This is the heart of the journey, where we face our shadows, our limitations, and are forced to surrender and reflect.
- The Wheel of Fortune (X): The universe throws you a curveball. Fate intervenes.
- The Hanged Man (XII): A major “pause.” You’re stuck, upside-down, forced to see the world from a new perspective.
- Death (XIII): Not a physical death, but a powerful, non-negotiable ending. An old self or situation must die for the new to be born.
Act 3: The Return (15 – 21) This is the homecoming, the integration of all you have learned.
- The Devil (XV): The ultimate challenge. Confronting our chains, our shadow, and our deepest fears.
- The Tower (XVI): The old, false structures in your life—the ones you built on a shaky foundation—come crashing down. Painful, but necessary for truth.
- The Star (XVII): After the Tower’s fall comes peace, hope, and a guidepost in the darkness.
- The World (XXI): The end of the cycle. Mastery, completion, and a new beginning.
How to Read the Majors in a Spread
When a Major Arcana card shows up in a reading, it’s a BIG sign. It points to a major life lesson, a karmic pattern, or a major archetypal energy at play. It’s the universe underlining a sentence in your story.
- The Lovers (VI): Not just about romance. It’s a MAJOR choice between values, people, or paths. A crossroads.
- The Tower (XVI): This is not a “bad” card. It’s the necessary destruction of an illusion or a structure that was built on a lie.
- The Sun (XIX): Pure joy, vitality, and success. A “Yes!” from the universe.
Your Turn: Your Fool’s Journey
- The Daily Major: For a week, pull one Major Arcana card each morning. Don’t think, just look. What energy does it bring to your day? The discipline of The Emperor? The creativity of The Empress? The challenge of The Tower?
- Your Journey Card: Which Major Arcana card are you most drawn to right now? Which one scares you a little? That’s often the one you need to look at.
The Major Arcana reminds us that our lives are not just a series of random events, but a hero’s journey. You are the Fool, stepping off the cliff, and The World is your homecoming.
In Part 5, we’ll bring it all together and learn how to do your first full-card reading for a friend or yourself.
