Beyond the First Draw: A Beginner’s Guide to the Tarot Suits (Part 2)

untitled 3 x 2 in 7

Welcome back, card-curious friend! So, you’ve done your first reading. You’ve got your deck, you’ve tried a simple spread, and maybe you’ve even pulled a card or two. You’ve got the hang of the how. But now you’re pulling cards and thinking: “Okay, it’s the Five of Cups. But what does it really mean for me, right now?”

That’s the real magic of tarot. It’s not about memorizing a dictionary of card meanings. It’s about learning the language. Think of it like this: the cards are the alphabet, and the suits are the grammar.

In this part, we’re moving beyond the one-card draw and building your first vocabulary word: The Four Suits.

Forget Memorization. Think Energy.

Before you even look at a guidebook, the Major Arcana (The Fool, The Magician, etc.) are your big life themes—your character’s main quest. The Major Arcana are the nouns: The Fool (the beginning), The Lovers (a major choice), The Tower (sudden change).

But the Minor Arcana—the 56 cards in the four suits—are the verbs, adjectives, and adverbs of your story. They are the action. And to understand them, you need to know the cast of characters in your deck: the Four Suits.

Wands: The Spark of Fire (Wills & Wands)

  • Element: Fire
  • Energy: Pure Energy. Passion. Action. Inspiration. Spark. Ambition.
  • The Classic Question: “What do I want to create, do, or start?”
  • In a Reading: Wands are the “go-getter” cards. They’re about the spark of an idea, the urge to travel, to be seen, to lead, to take action. They are the “how” of your ambitions.
  • You know it’s a Wands moment when… you feel a burst of energy, a new idea, a sudden inspiration, or the urge to book a last-minute trip.

Cups: The Flow of Water (Cups and Emotions)

  • Element: Water
  • Energy: Pure Emotion. Love. Intuition. Dreams. Relationships. Flow.
  • The Classic Question: “What am I feeling, and what are my heart’s true needs?”
  • In a Reading: Cups are the language of the heart. They’re about your inner world: love, friendship, creativity, dreams, and emotional needs. They aren’t about logic; they’re about feeling.
  • You know it’s a Cups moment when… you’re in your feelings, daydreaming, having a heart-to-heart with a friend, or needing a good cry.

Swords: The Cut of Air (Swords & Logic)

  • Element: Air
  • Energy: The Intellect. Logic. Communication. Conflict. Decision. Thought.
  • The Classic Question: “What am I thinking? What is the truth here?”
  • In a Reading: Swords are the cards of the mind. They are brilliant, sharp, and often challenging. They represent thoughts, words, difficult truths, and the consequences of our decisions. They can be about mental clarity or mental anguish.
  • You know it’s a Swords moment when… you’re overthinking, having a debate, making a “pros and cons” list, or feeling the sting of harsh words (yours or someone else’s).

Pentacles: The Grounding of Earth (Coins)

  • Element: Earth
  • Energy: The Physical World. Money. Home. Work. The Body. Security.
  • The Classic Question: “What do I need to build, secure, or take care of?”
  • In a Reading: Pentacles are the “real-world” suit. They ground the tarot. They are your health, your paycheck, your home, your body, your daily routine. They’re about what is tangible and built.
  • You know it’s a Pentacles moment when… you’re budgeting, cleaning your house, filing your taxes, building a business, or cooking a nourishing meal.

Your Homework (It’s Fun, I Promise!)

This week, don’t worry about a full reading. Just take a few minutes a day with your deck.

  1. Suit Sifting: Shuffle your deck and pull out one card from each suit: a Wands card, a Cups card, a Swords card, and a Pentacles card. Just by looking at the pictures, can you feel the different energies? Which one feels most like you today?
  2. One-Suit Focus: Pick one suit for a day. Shuffle your deck and pull a single card. Is it a Swords day (you’re thinking a lot about a problem)? Is it a Pentacles day (time to finally fix that broken thing)?

The Takeaway: You don’t need to memorize 78 cards. Start with these four “personalities” or “energies.” When you see a Pentacles card, ask: What in my physical world is this about? When you see a Swords card, ask: What mental challenge or truth is here?

You’re not just pulling a random card. You’re identifying which “archetype of experience” is showing up in your life right now. That’s how you move from memorizing to understanding.

Next time, we’ll build on this by looking at the numbers on the cards (Aces, 2s, 3s, etc.) and what they add to the story.

In the meantime, post in the comments: Which suit’s energy do you feel most connected to today? 🌿
